Giclee Printing - A Giclee print is a high-resolution reproduction of an original digital file or scan, produced on a precision large format digital printer. The process employs seven colors of lightfast pigmented inks sprayed on to a special media actually mixing the colors on the media surface to create true shades and hues.
Giclee printer technology utilizes a very sophisiticated inkjet process which employs numerous very fine printheads, resulting in a wider color gamut than traditional lithography. The colors are brighter, last longer, details are crisper and resolution is so high that colors have virtually continuous tone.
Giclee was originally developed as a proofing system for the lithograph printing process. It soon became apparent that the litho presses were having a hard time delivering quality and color equal to the Giclee proofs. In addition, Giclee prints are produced directly from a digital file which avoids the generations of detail robbing negatives and printing plates that are used in traditional lithography.
